Instructing solicitors typically seek a report on the psychiatric state of the individual with special reference to effects of trauma such as torture, involvement in or witnessing war situations, in addition to consequences for the individual of being forcibly returned to their country of origin.
We also have specialist knowledge and experience regarding the mental health of unaccompanied minors or those who arrived as unaccompanied minors, where the Home Office is seeking their deportation.
Members of the group have been involved in creating Royal College of Psychiatrists Position Statements on fitness to fly, restraint and effects of detention.
We have experience of appearing in court, and providing training to judges on the assessment of psychiatric evidence.
David Bell set up and served upon the Royal College of Psychiatry Working Party on Psychiatric Evidence in Immigration/Asylum Proceedings. The Royal College published a report on this issue and has given evidence on the effects of detention on those who are mentally ill.
Sarah Majid is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists Working Party on the Mental Health of Asylum Seekers and has set up training for psychiatrists on assessment and management of psychiatric disorders in asylum seekers, and on preparing Medico-Legal Reports in this population.
Provides culturally sensitive support to refugees and asylum-seeking children, young people and families in north London.
