Introducing Fiona Nolan our new Clinical Professor in Nursing

25 May 2018

We are really pleased to announce the appointment of our new Clinical Professor in Nursing, Professor Fiona Nolan. Fiona will be starting with us at the beginning of June as an honorary appointment. She has a huge wealth of experience so we are looking forward to her joining us at the Tavistock and Portman.

Fiona NolanI am looking forward to taking up this honorary appointment with the Trust and to starting work with this impressive group of nurses. The specialist clinical services will provide an excellent basis for academic enquiry. My role with the Tavistock is part of a wider programme of engagement with NHS Trusts as Florence Nightingale Foundation clinical chair, to promote research as a core nursing activity and to develop clear pathways for clinical academic careers. I anticipate that our collaboration will have tangible benefits to nursing and other staff groups involved and most importantly to  users of the Tavistock and Portman services.”

Fiona’s role in the Trust will be to facilitate nurses’ active engagement in research and to guide development of clinical academic career pathways within the nursing discipline and more broadly across the Trust.

She will promote our work externally through her many networks and relationships. Fiona will engage with colleagues from nursing and other disciplines, providing mentorship and guidance to build capacity and capability in research, small grant acquisition, writing for publication and conference presentation. She will also work collaboratively with us to apply for practice development and research funding. Fiona’s work will be closely aligned to the nursing discipline strategy and the Trust’s wider research objectives.

Fiona has been employed as Clinical Professor of Mental Health Nursing at the University of Essex since 2017. Prior to this she held joint clinical academic posts between University College London and Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust for over 15 years, most recently as Deputy Director of Nursing and Research. Fiona is one of 8 current Florence Nightingale Foundation Chairs of Nursing in the UK and the only one in mental health. She is a highly experienced clinical academic nurse with track record of leading organisational change, building research capacity and conducting national and international research.
