The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust is a specialist mental health Trust which provides outpatient and psychological, services. We do not provide any acute services nor inpatient care. This is relevant to your reading and understanding of our responses below.

  1. Adult eating disorders services:
  • We do not diagnose adult eating disorders, and do not have a dedicated service dealing with this, though we might work with adults with eating problems as part of their overall mental health presentation. Our intake for adult patients is not led by a primary psychiatric diagnosis, as we work with a psychodynamic model of formulation.
  1. Adolescent/ child eating disorder services
  • The Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, North West London is the identified local pathway for all Children and Young People (CYP) presenting with eating disorders. We cannot report on the number of CYP seen within our services put on the ‘not recovered pathway’.
  • The Tavistock and Portman provide a small an early intervention eating difficulties service only for CYP aged 8-17 years.
    • Our service is a psychologically focused service aimed at supporting children and young people aged 8-18, along with their families, who are experiencing eating difficulties that do not meet the criteria for a formal eating disorder diagnosis, such as Anorexia Nervosa (AN), Bulimia Nervosa (BN), or Binge Eating Disorder (BED). We also assist those showing signs of Avoidant and Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), which may include:
  • Sensory-based food avoidance
  • Food avoidance due to concerns about potential negative consequences
  • Lack of interest in food

We do not provide diagnosis to those receiving support from this service

The multidisciplinary team comprises a Psychotherapist, Counselling Psychologist, Nurses, and an Occupational Therapist. Although we do not have dedicated Dietetic or Psychiatric Consultant provisions within our team, we can refer to these specialised services when necessary.

Our Eating Difficulties and ARFID service is committed to delivering treatment in accordance with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines for eating disorders (2004). Our primary aim is to enhance the psychological, physical, and social functioning of the young individuals we support. Approaches include a parents group and other interventions, which are informed by FBT, CBT-AR, CBT-T.
