NHSE/I National preceptorship programme 2022

Nurse

The national preceptorship project is focused on the design, development and delivery of a national preceptorship framework and associated quality standard for all organisations in health and social care.

The NHS England and NHS Improvement national retention programme established the national preceptorship project in November 2021, with the London NHS region overseeing design and development of a national preceptorship framework for nursing and associated quality standards for nursing.

Preceptorship plays a key role in retention by setting in place a structure to support newly qualified professionals, allowing them to translate their knowledge into everyday practice, grow in confidence and have the best possible start in their careers.

Research is well underway and the plan is to design and develop a national preceptorship framework in collaboration with stakeholders to roll out implementation in England, starting in September 2022. These collectively agreed set of standards and a framework for good practice will be flexible so that it can be adapted to different settings, locations and types of organisation. Its relevance and usefulness for other professional groups in healthcare is also being considered.

This exciting project, under the leadership of Dr Jane Wray (clinical lead) and Desiree Cox (programme lead), is collaborating with regional preceptorship and retention leads, new registrants and the organisations and professional groups that support them.

Through this partnership working, the project will bring people together and learn from best practice from around England to develop a national framework and quality standards for preceptorship.
