Supporting promotion of mental health careers and developing psychology graduate career pathways

To illustrate the current career structure whilst also drawing attention to barriers to working in mental health services in the NHS and to consider the pathway for psychology graduates

Summary

The project will create a map of mental health careers and attempt to better understand psychology graduates’ career aspirations. This is one of the key outputs identified by the HEE Psychology New Roles Task and Finish Group and the Unit is using this group to guide and steer the project.

In-depth recommendations and action plans to improve mental health career pathways


Stakeholders

Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, the British Psychological Society, universities, the Royal Colleges of Nursing and Psychiatrists, and mental health trusts and other experts across the system.

As part of the project, we commissioned the National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health (NCCMH) to undertake further investigation into psychology graduates’ attitudes towards mental health careers. The report can be downloaded here:
