Disabled student and trainee group
This is a group for all disabled students whether your disability is related to a physical or mental health condition or a learning difficulty. This group is a facilitated space in which disabled students can meet, share experiences and support each other.
It aims to empower disabled students to engage with experiences and issues around disability in relation to the Tavistock and Portman and to voice their experiences and thoughts. This Group can also function as a channel for communication and feedback between disabled students and the Department of Education and Training. The Trust is aware of the need to train mental health professionals from a diversity of backgrounds and of the need to listen to its current disabled students.
The Trust provides individual support for disabled students and this can be accessed via our Disability Officers who are part of the student support team. This might include liaising with departments and agreeing reasonable adjustments to ensure disabled students are treated fairly and equitably or it may involve assisting students to apply for Disabled Students Allowance - financial support to fund equipment or mentoring that can support disabled students whilst undertaking their studies. You can declare a disability via your MyTAP portal at any point during your studies with us, at which point a Disability Officer will contact you to discuss your needs. This Group is a social/mutual support group where experiences can be shared and discussed and from which issues around Disability can be channeled back into the system in a constructive manner where appropriate. Please note that attending this group, does not mean you have formally declared a disability with us.
The group will meet twice a term for 50 minutes.
