Course 1: Perinatal Training for Community and Inpatient Perinatal Mental Health Team Managers Leaders
This 3-day course has been developed in line with the perinatal mental health competency framework and will address the complex issues facing managers and leaders within perinatal mental health services.
The course will consist of a series of presentations by Dr Liz McDonald, Dr Amanda Jones, Dr Nic Horley, Dr Lucinda Green and Jo Maitland, covering the complex range of relationships that perinatal mental health teams have to consider, alongside an overview of maternal psychiatric conditions and their treatments while holding the baby in mind. The course will have formal teaching sessions with group exercises, case discussions and opportunities for networking.
This course is aimed at managers of both inpatient mother and baby units and specialist community perinatal mental health teams. Newly appointed, or soon-to-be-in post managers and team leaders are encouraged to attend as well as those already in post.

- Understanding unconscious defensive processes
- Managing relationships and expectations
- Working with risk
- Working with multiple agencies
- Understanding attachment behaviour
- Keeping Family relationships in mind
- Working with fathers and partners
- Understanding the impact of personality disorders upon teams
- Sustaining team’s emotional resources
- Working within the national picture
- Understanding the effects of Psychosis; severe mood disorders and anxiety upon teams/clinicians
