A century after the Tavistock Clinic saw its first patient, in the wake of a global pandemic and the mobilisation of Black Lives Matter, countries across the world are facing the consequences of widening inequalities and an escalating mental health crisis.
The Tavistock and Portman has been a leader of innovation in mental wellbeing practice and public policy for the last 100 years. It has been at the forefront of providing compassionate and contemporary responses to the major events of the 20th and 21st century. How should the NHS Foundation Trust best apply its distinctive relational thinking to respond, at both the practice and public policy levels, to these challenges and opportunities?
Our keynote speakers Jacqui Dyer MBE and Julia Unwin DBE will both be presenting their perspectives on the key issues and possibilities facing us, and how we might navigate both the current moment and the future.
Dinesh Sinha, the Trust's Medical Director, will paint a picture of the mental health landscape and how the distinctive Tavistock perspective can shape it for the better. He will explore emerging approaches and innovations in our mental health work.
Chaired by Paul Burstow, Chair of the Trust Board, and Louise Lyon, Chair of the Centenary Programme, our audience will be invited to respond and to provide their own reflections on our contemporary and future mental health challenges.

Speaker biographies
JACQUI DYER MBE is an independent health and social care consultant, with lived experience, and a background in adult mental health commissioning as well as community and family social work. Jacqui was vice chair of England's Mental Health Taskforce, which collaboratively developed the 5 Year Forward View for Mental Health (NHSE) and its transformation of mental health service policy and provision. Its focus on reducing mental health inequalities was further strengthened in the NHS Long Term Plan for Mental Health. Jacqui has co-led the Mayoral ‘Thrive London’ since inception. Jacqui is an elected Councillor where she is cabinet member for jobs, skills and community safety having previously jointly held the health and adult social care cabinet portfolio. Jacqui is co-founder and chair of Lambeth’s Black Thrive Partnership which takes a collective impact approach to improving the mental health and wellbeing of its Black Caribbean and African citizens through addressing inequities in the system. DINESH SINHA is Medical Director at the Tavistock and Portman. He joined the Trust in August 2018. He has significant experience in the health service having held board level and senior leadership roles, including within his previous trust and clinical commissioning organisations (CCGs). He was previously associate medical director, head of service and consultant psychiatrist in psychotherapy at East London NHS Foundation Trust. He has held roles on several CCG governing bodies. Dinesh is a psychiatrist and psychotherapist, a fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, member of the RCPsych Medical Psychotherapy Faculty Executive Committee and holds an MBA from Lancaster University Management School.
JULIA UNWIN DBE is an experienced non-executive, speaker, consultant and mentor. She was the Chief Executive of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation from 2007 until the end of 2016. She has written and spoken extensively on issues relating to philanthropy, governance, the voluntary sector and its relationship with government. Her publications include ‘Why Fight Poverty?’, ‘Kindness, Emotions and Relationships’, the ‘Blind Spot in Public Policy Making’ and ‘The Grant Making Tango’. She is currently a non-executive director of the Mears Group PLC, of Yorkshire Water and of the Financial Reporting Council and Chair Designate of York St. Johns Governing Body. In 2018 she was appointed to the Council of Economic Advisers by the First Minister of Scotland. In 2010 Julia was awarded the Outstanding Leadership Award in the Charity Awards and has received honorary doctorates from three universities. In the 2020 New Years Honours she received a DBE.
