Gender services directorate
Our Gender Services Directorate comprises two services:
Gender identity development service (GIDS)
GIDS is a nationally commissioned service for children and young people who experience difficulties in the development of their gender identity. This includes children who are unhappy with their biological sex. We recognise that atypical gender identity development can be an extremely distressing condition and we try to help young people and their families cope. Our specialist service is the only one of its kind in the NHS.

The Gender Identity Clinic (GIC) is the largest and oldest gender clinic in the UK, dating back to 1966. We accept referrals from all over the UK for people with issues related to gender.
We are a multi-disciplinary administrative and clinical team, including psychologists, psychiatrists, endocrinologists and speech and language therapists. We work together in order to provide holistic gender care, focusing on the biological/medical, psychological and social aspects of gender.
The clinic is sometimes referred to as the Charing Cross (CX) Gender Identity Clinic. This is because it used to be near the Charing Cross acute hospital. The GIC is now based near Finchley Road Underground Station in North West London.
