Why become a Governor?

Message from Mr George Wilkinson, Public Governor Rest of England & Wales and Lead Governor.
The opportunity to be a Governor at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust is an opportunity to make a real difference. As Governors we hold the Trust’s non-executive directors, individually and collectively, to account for the performance of the board of directors, and we represent the interests of members and the public.

We are very much involved and valued. We may not make the decisions: that is for the Trust Board, but we make sure, whether it is at the quarterly Council of Governors meetings, in Joint meetings (once a year the Board and Council meet together), or participating in various internal Trust committees, that our members’ voices are heard and the public view put. In so doing, we play a critical role in ensuring that the Trust remains publicly accountable for the services it provides.

The Trust seeks our views as Governors on a whole range of issues. In the past twelve months alone, Governors have taken part in the work involved in the Trust’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion agenda and in the Trust’s plans for relocation, as well as other key issues that affect the Trust. Add to that our involvement in the Trust’s ongoing governance. Governors don’t just attend Council meetings. We have appointed non-executive directors and reviewed their appraisals, given our input into a more streamlined governance structure for the Trust, and been involved in helping formulate the direction of the Trust in various committees.

We come from a wide range of backgrounds, with very different skills and experiences, but as Governors we have a common purpose - to do what we can to ensure that the Tavistock and Portman thrives and prospers for the benefit of its patients, their families and carers, and its people. It is a significant responsibility and it isn’t always comfortable. It shouldn’t be, as challenge and support are different sides of the same coin. But it is hugely worthwhile. The Trust’s website puts it very well: “Our Governors are the guardians of our mission and values, and they help us achieve our objectives.”
