Our Digital Academy launches Senior Mental Health Lead training: a whole school approach

25 April 2022

Today, our Digital Academy launched Senior Mental Health Lead training: a whole school approach, a new online programme comprising four courses to help individuals promote positive mental health and wellbeing in educational settings. We are proud to currently be the only NHS mental health Trust which has been assured by the Department for Education (DfE) for grant-funded Senior Mental Health Lead training.

More information on the course and how to apply for DfE grant funding can be found on the Digital Academy website.

What will participants learn on this course?

Senior Mental Health Lead training: a whole school approach has been designed by highly experienced teachers and educational psychologists to help participants develop knowledge and understanding of both the universality and the complexity of mental wellbeing. As well as equipping participants with planning and audit tools to create workable systems in each individual's educational setting, the programme will guide Senior Mental Health Leads to develop a personalised plan that will allow individuals to influence, promote and embed a whole school or college approach to positive mental health and wellbeing.

Who is this programme for?

Our beginner-level programme is suitable for individuals who have recently been designated as Senior Mental Health Leads in their setting, or have completed some mental health leadership training and are looking to consolidate their learning. The programme is suitable for all settings, including primary schools and middle deemed primary, secondary schools and middle deemed secondary, special schools, colleges including sixth form and further education colleges, and alternative provision settings, and our intention is to develop a community of practice where participants collaborate and share experiences.

How does it work?

Once eligibility for DfE funding has been confirmed and an application for grant funding approved, participants can book to join the course on the Digital Academy website. The programme comprises a bundle of four five-hour courses, all available entirely online and accessible at any time convenient to each individual. Within each course, participants can book a place on an optional live seminar with fellow participants and one of our course tutors to enrich and share learnings with a multidisciplinary group. Throughout the course participants will engage in self-assessment and reflection to assess their confidence in the skills gained. Participants will also receive feedback from the course tutors during the live sessions to ensure that the plans developed will be both realistic and effective.

Why study with our Digital Academy?

The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust has been at the forefront of exploring mental health and wellbeing for over 100 years. Many therapies and practices used around the world to treat mental health problems were devised at the Tavistock and Portman and, to this day, we continue to share our clinical expertise to help everyone in society. We bring our extensive experience to this programme as the only NHS mental health clinic currently assured by the DfE for grant-funded Senior Mental Health Lead training, and the only NHS Trust to be registered as a Higher Education Provider by The Office for Students. This means your learning will be grounded in practice and real life application. With our Digital Academy, we have made our training accessible and available to everyone to explore in your own time, at your own pace.
