The Lighthouse 1The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan,  and Home Office minister, Victoria Atkins, officially opened The Lighthouse yesterday.

Based in the heart of Camden, The Lighthouse sees clinicians from the Tavistock and Portman working with UCLH and law enforcement in a single facility to support young people to recover from sexual abuse.

Previously young people who reported sexual abuse could face multiple interviews with social workers, law enforcement and medical professionals in different and sometimes unfriendly settings, while also struggling to access long-term emotional support.

Based on the Icelandic Barnahus model, The Lighthouse brings all that support under one roof, and will also gather evidence from interviews to help gain more successful prosecutions in the future.

Paul Jenkins, Chief Executive of the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“The Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust has a long history of supporting young people who are victims of abuse and exploitation, and our clinicians will draw on this expertise to help these young people and their families to recover and move on in their lives.

“We’re delighted to be able to lend the expertise and experience of our clinicians to this innovative and much needed facility and support young victims recovery from sexual abuse by attending to their physical and emotional health as well as supporting them through any investigation and Court process. ”
