Help inform and develop our anti-racism work – invitation to tender a research project and action plan

5 February 2021

The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust wishes to commission research and an action plan as part of our intention to become an anti-racist organisation.

We are seeking a comprehensive external review that will hold a mirror up to our organisation. We want to better understand the culture of our Trust and the lived experience of our Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic staff. We want this review to go beyond our existing approaches and work with the organisation to come up with a clear, deliverable strategy and action plan to change the culture of the organisation and to hold us to account.

The deadline for bid submission is Friday 26 February 2021. Our hope is for the work to begin in April 2021, with a report delivered in June 2021.

In 2017 the Trust launched its Race Equality Strategy. Whilst we have made steps forward in some areas, we have not made sufficient progress in improving the representation of staff from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds in senior positions within the Trust, or in shifting the dial on their experiences of working here. We understand the value in having a truly diverse staff group and want to develop an environment that attracts diversity and ensures all staff thrive and achieve their full potential.

The differential impact of Covid-19 on different ethnic groups, as well as the killing of George Floyd in the United States and the prominence of the Black Lives Matter movement, have further exposed the depth of systemic racism across our society and the institutions within it. These events have enabled recent conversations within the Trust which have highlight the issues to which we need to face up and address. We need to actively become anti-racist in our stance as an organisation, and have set a public commitment to undertake a fundamental review and relaunch of our strategy and develop an action plan to deliver on this.
