Extra funding provided to train 700 social workers
21 May 2018
The vital contributions and challenging work of child and family social workers are being acknowledged in a new grant awarded by Department for Education.
The new award will provide continuous training and development for up to 700 social workers. The Tavistock and Portman Trust, one of the leading mental health and social care education providers in the country, will lead the design and delivery of the programme.
The funding will be directed towards those social workers who have moved into practice supervisor positions, with responsibility for supporting and developing social work practice. Practice supervisors play a crucial role in upskilling and supporting the rest of the workforce. This new programme marks a significant milestone in improving safeguarding and will strengthen the robustness of training in social care.
Paul Burstow, Chair of the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, said:
“The Tavistock will bring its substantial expertise as a provider of high quality training for social workers both rooted in its reflective practice traditions and at the cutting edge of current practice, to the programme. We are delighted to be working together with our partners to deliver this training and support the important work of child and family social work supervisors and look forward to working closely with the sector.”
Every local authority will be entitled to access places for their social workers on this national programme over the next two years.
The other programme partners include Research in Practice, the University of Sussex and Goldsmiths, the University of London.
Dez Holmes, Director of ‘Research in Practice’, who coordinates the programme, said:
“These newly-appointed Practice Supervisors are taking on significant responsibility, they play a vital role in enabling excellent social work practice and deserve the best possible support.”
